Maarten Baptist wins
Red Dot Design Award 2010
The Dutch designer Maarten Baptist has won a Red Dot Design Award; one of the most coveted prizes in the world of design. His Single Sofa, which combines the classic seating functions of a sofa with a chaise longue and day bed without taking up any extra space, won in the product design class.

At first glance the Single Sofa could be mistaken for any archetypal couch, with two armrests, an upright backrest and a generous seat. So what? Well it’s that angle in the seat that has turned it into an Award winner. With that kink, cunningly shaped for the human form, Baptist has made the Single Sofa the ideal couch for sitting, lounging or even sleeping. And the jury of the Red Dot Design Award can confirm that it also just happens to be extremely good to look at.
Maarten Baptist: ‘If you pay attention to how people use objects, you’ll notice that most people don’t actually sit on a sofa: more often they sprawl, lounge or curl up in a corner. That’s why those huge corner units are so popular. But you need a lot of room for one of those. The Single Sofa is the answer.

The Red Dot Design Award is the largest and most prestigious design competition in the world and is held annually. This year some 1600 designers from 57 countries submitted their designs to an international jury of design experts and critics, who judged them on criteria such as innovation and functionality.
